Our story begins with an old man wandering an abandoned wasteland blanketed in thick snow – a survivor of the end of the world… His hood comes down and his face revealed. It’s so great to see Rufus again after last witnessing him falling from Elysium in a heroic final gesture in the third chapter of his story – this is when you know Deponia is back…
Within the first hour or so you get to meet plenty of colourful new characters, and learn a bit more about your old favourites. As the game begins in the past, before Elysian pixie Goal falls from the Organon ship and Rufus’s simple life is turned on its head, the backgrounds of some key players are quickly revealed. Wenzel is going about his day-to-day business, Lotti has just made the transition into a woman, and Rufus’s most important mission is to deal with the controlling wrath of his wonderfully sassy girlfriend, Toni, hunting down a mysterious pink elephant in order to prevent her prized wine glasses from breaking.
Of course, while it’s great to get an origin story as a long-time fan of the series, the fact they’ve gone back to the beginning opens up an opportunity for new players who haven’t yet met these characters to get stuck in. While character development is important, it is essentially the puzzling adventure and laugh-out-loud humor aspects of Deponia that really make these games – and Deponia Doomsday is no exception to that rule.
Beginning with the hunting of the elusive pink elephant, alongside a homeless man and a time traveller, is a sure sign that this fourth installment of the Deponia story is going to continue to be just as wacky at its predecessors. The charm is well and truly back, as well as new gameplay features, including button mashing to force closed doors, and hidden trails to follow, and that’s just the beginning. Oh, and did I mention you can tactically time travel to undo your many mistakes this time?
I for one can’t wait to see how this story progresses, and am looking forward to filling in the gaps and finding out what really does happen. Was Rufus’s dream just a dream, or is there more to it than that? One thing’s for sure, whatever the end result, it’s going to be one hell of a ride.
